Tulsa Quilts for Kids™ – Sugar Baby (Approx. 32 x 42)

This is a quick and simple quilt to make that will give great joy to a child in crisis. Seam allowance of ¼” is used for all seams.

Fabric Requirements

(Based on 44”/45” fabric)

12 – 2 ½” strips of assorted fabrics

Sashing/Border – 1 yard

Backing: 1 yard

Binding: 1/2 yard (5 strips @ 2 ½” x WOF)

Your Kit Contains

 

12 – 2 ½” strips [2 of each us fabric]

1 – 2 ½” strip (sashing fabric)

5 – 4 ½” strips (border fabric)

5 – 2 ½” strips (binding)

 

1.     Block Construction: Select 6 strips and cut each strip as follows:

       Two – 10 ½” pieces, Two – 2 ½” pieces and One – 6 ½” piece

 

2.    Take the remaining 6 strips and cut each strip as follows:

       Two - 4 ½” pieces and Two - 6 ½” pieces

       [You will have fabric leftover from each of the strips which you do not need.]

 

3.    Lay out all 6 blocks as randomly as possible. Layout blocks with two 10 ½” pieces, two

4 ½” pieces, two 2 ½” pieces, two 6 ½” pieces with the same fabrics and one 6 ½” piece of

another fabric. [This last 6 ½” strip will be the center strip of the block and should be

different in each block.]

 

 Making the Sugar Baby Quilt

 

4.   Construction of Block:

       Sew one 2 ½” piece and one 4 ½”

       Piece together. Make 2 for each

       Block. Press.

 

5.   Sew one 6 ½” (center strip) in the

       middle of both the strips made in

       Step 4. Be sure to alternate the

       2 ½” piece with one on the top and

       one on the bottom. You now have a

     3-strip set.

 

6.         Add two identical 6 ½” pieces on each side of the three-step block.

 

7.         Sew a 10 ½” piece to the top and bottom of the block. Now there are 7 strips.

 

8.         Repeat steps 4 thru 7 for each block for a total of 6 blocks. Trim your blocks. They should be around 10 ½”.

 

9.         Sashing: Cut the 2 ½” strip into four 10 ½” pieces. Sew one 10 ½” piece on the bottom of four blocks. Press.

 

10.        Sew two rows of three blocks each. Each row will be approximately 34” x 10 ½”. Press.

 

11.        Sew one 4 ½” strip between the two rows for the middle sashing. Trim and press.

 

12.      Cut the four remaining 4 ½” strips as follows: Two 4 ½” x 34” and Two 4 ½” x 42”.

 

13.      Sew a 34” strip to the top and bottom of your quilt. Press.

 

14.       Sew a 42” strip to each side of your quilt top and press.

 

15.       Layer the quilt top over 1/8 – 1/4 inch low loft batting and backing. Quilt as you desire. Remember that this quilt will be loved and washed a lot, so make sure that there is enough quilting to hold the quilt together for a long time.  Bind the quilt as you normally would.

 

16.       Your quilt kit also includes a label. Please sew on all four sides of the BACK (bottom) of the quilt. Please do not tuck the label into the seam. Sign the back of the quilt with a permanent fabric marker (or with stitches).  A central drop-off has been established at the Quilt Sampler located at 6024 South Sheridan, Tulsa, OK (918) 493-3388 for the return of your completed quilt and fabric remnants.
